Artist Statement

The synthesis project was based on how we related to the word domestic. When researching this subject, I was intrigued by the idea of domestic art. In my research, I tried to research how domestic art differs when artists are coming from different backgrounds. I wanted to explore the idea of all the different ways someone can feel at home. Ideas for my synthesis project were conceptualized of many different sketches of an ambiguous meaning of home. The idea I went through after creating many thumbnails was to draw a family playing video games together. While my idea is based on the idea of home and inspired by domesticated art, it has a higher concept than just home. Growing up, I always loved the times I would be able to play video games with all of my cousins. However, this is a generational thing. Older generations would not consider playing video games as quality family time. This work is the theme of how domestic life has changed overtime and modernized. To emphasize how times have changed in today's world, the children on the left are playing video games with their grandma, on the right on the couch. Next to the grandmother is a grandfather who is taking photos of this family moment on a smartphone. Additionally, they are playing a shooter game together. Back then, shooting games were considered to be too violent, especially for families. My piece is meant to be interesting in the sense that grandparents normally don’t play video games, let alone a game considered to be violent, with families. I believe that when my generation becomes older, they will do activities, like gaming with grandchildren, as grandparents. In the end, I added color to the family and the video game on the tv screen to make it the area of focus. I also cut off some of the piece on the right side because it was distracting from the main point of the piece. Overall, I think this piece makes an interesting statement about how domestic life has changed, and that was my intention for creating a domestic art based on modern life.
