Mix It Up

Mix It Up

Foundation Drawing Fall, 2021. 22”x30” drawing paper, pencil.

Artist Statement

This piece was an in class study. The objective was to experiment with transparency, reflection, texture, and pattern. The materials used were, Charcoal, white conte, white charcoal, graphite, and ebony pencil. It was rendered on 22”x30” paper. Ideas were conceptualized by finding visually appealing objects and configuring them into a composition. Most of the elements in this piece were drawn from observation. The composition of both organic and man made items make for interesting content. I tried to create overlap and transparency in some of the objects. For example, the figure of the cow wasn’t glass, but I rendered it as if it was glass for experimentation of different elements. There is hierarchy in this piece, the mannequin and the diagonal skull serve as focal points. If I were to redo this piece again, I would use ink and push the value range even further. I would additionally try to experiment with more overlapping of glass objects. I think transparency is more visually interesting. Overall, this piece is aesthetic and while all of the objects are different, the end result is unified.
