Artist Statement

This piece was an in class study on rendering glass, transparency, and reflections. I used materials such as graphite, charcoal, and white conte crayon. It was rendered on 18”x24” drawing paper. It was made by drawing from an observation of an assortment of different objects. Compositionally, the piece is very strong as it leads the eye left to right. There are a variety of values throughout the piece. There is a strong sense of depth throughout as well due to the overlapping of all of the objects. An interesting part about the piece are the two glass objects to the left, they show transparency. The viewer can clearly see the objects behind the glass There are many textures represented in this piece such as glass and metal. The bike wheel creates hierarchy in the piece, it serves as a focal point. The negative space in this piece was also accounted for with the black background. This piece is a strong example of chiaroscuro. If I were to redo this piece again, I would try to include more glass objects. I feel that glass makes the piece more interesting with the overlap.
